According to the Princeton dictionary it is:
- an event or course of events that will happen in the future
- the ultimate agency regarded as predetermining the course of events
- fortune: your overall circumstances or everything that happens to you
Does this mean that your life is predetermined from birth? The word destiny comes from the old French word destine and originated in the 14th century which meant to do something, to design or to intend.
Destiny also meant the power which predetermines, personified as a Goddess. Many cultures had goddesses of destiny like the goddesses of destiny in greece known as the 3 fates, clothos spun the thread that represented a person's life, Lachesis decided the length of your life and Atropos was the one who cut it at the appointed time!
Freya was the Norse goddess of love, beauty and destiny.
So destiny could be described as the path that you intend for yourself co-created with a divine source or your higher self.
I believe that before birth we make soul agreements as to what we will do during our lifetime. This does not mean that everything is predetermined. But rather that we come here to learn certain lessons, experience various events and some of us bring gifts from the other side to be spiritual ambassadors.
Destiny has a sense of mystery and magic just as romance does.
